Working memory is the cognitive system most studied in the brain-training literature, and the findings are sobering. Targeted training (n-back tasks, complex span tasks) produces reliable improvement on the trained task and modest improvement on closely related tasks, but transfer to general fluid intelligence is small and inconsistent across well-controlled studies.

If your goal is improved performance on working-memory subtests specifically, practice with n-back tasks (CogniFit, Brain Workshop) for 20 to 40 hours produces 0.5 to 1.0 standard deviation gains on the trained task. The gains may modestly transfer to digit-span and complex-span tasks. They do not reliably transfer to matrix-reasoning, vocabulary, or other distant cognitive measures.

If your goal is improved everyday cognitive functioning that depends on working memory (reading comprehension, mental arithmetic, multi-step planning), the most effective interventions are environmental rather than cognitive. Adequate sleep recovers most working-memory deficits within 1 to 3 nights. Regular aerobic exercise produces 0.3 to 0.5 SD improvements over weeks. Reducing chronic stress and avoiding cognitive overload during high-demand periods both help.

Working memory declines with age — typically 0.5 to 1.0 standard deviation between ages 20 and 70 in healthy adults. The decline can be partially offset by the lifestyle factors above and by sustained engagement in cognitively demanding work. Total prevention is not currently possible.

Practical workarounds for limited working memory matter at least as much as training. Externalize information that does not need to be held in mind: notes, lists, calendars, voice memos. Chunk large information into meaningful units. Take advantage of recognition (which uses long-term memory) over recall (which uses working memory) when designing personal systems. These workarounds compound across years of practice.
